My friend had sent me over a link to the Pocket Princesses, and in my fit of laughter as I scrolled through her cartoons, I decided to make this post on my top 10 Disney Princess artist recreations. Check them out below!

1. Child Disney Princesses

moonchildinthesky, from Argentina, decided to recreate the Disney princesses as children and turned their animal partners into plushies they would embrace. My favorite in the set is definitely Meg, who got Hades as a plushie and is baffled by the notion of even owning such a hideous creature. She’s had a bunch of recent additions as well, such as Snow White, Cinderella, and Pocahontas.

2. Disney Princess Fighters

Australia-based illustrator, joshwmc, created a backstory as to why each of the Disney princesses are now fighters. These are fantastic renditions done on Painter. He mentioned how it was really difficult to re-invent some of them since they were already warriors to begin with, such as Mulan. What do you think of his choices?

3. Hipster Disney Princesses

Deviantart user viria13 from Ukraine developed these fashionable Disney princesses with a hipster flair in early 2012!

4. Historical Disney Princesses

Los Angeles based illustrator Clair Hummel is an artist for Microsoft Game Studios Publishing. She decided to measure up the original Disney princess costume designs to see if they were historically accurate. Flavorwire takes note of her commentary for each princess she drew, such as Pocahontas being a portrayal of only the Disney character in 17th century Powhatan clothing since the real Pocahontas was 12 years old when she met John Smith. Since her feature on Flavorwire, she also created a historically accurate Mulan and Rapunzel. You can buy prints of her pieces here.

5. Obese Disney Princesses

Creepy Miranda illustrator Aly Bellissimo makes a social statement with her obese renditions of Snow White, Jasmine, Belle, and Cinderella.

6. Pocket Princesses

Portland-based illustrator Amy Mebberson has imagined various scenarios of how it would pan out if our Disney princesses were to ever meet. Her hilarious comics depict major conflicts due to varying personalities. You should look here to get more of her comics!

7. Real Life Disney Princesses

Finnish graphic design student Jirka Väätäinen (first name pronounced Yir-ka) took it upon himself in April 2011 to photoshop a real life version of of his favorite Disney villain, Ursula from The Little Mermaid. He followed up with Ariel, and then Belle from Beauty and the Beast, and the rest is history! Since working on the Disney princesses in 2011, he’s created a real life version of Alice from Alice in Wonderland, Jane from Tarzan, and Tinkerbell from Peter Pan in 2012.

8. Seven Deadly Sins Disney Princesses

Illustrator Chris Hill re-imagined our favorite Disney princesses as each of the Seven Deadly Sins in an art nouveau style. I think that some depictions are spot-on, while others are a little iffy. What do you think?

9. Superhero Disney Princesses

Melissa Erickson re-empowers the typical damsels-in-distress to make them our heroes who can actually save the day! Not that some of them needed a costume to be a hero…

10. Vogue Disney Princesses

Art student Dante Tyler decided to re-invent the Disney princesses as Vogue cover models. His pieces are fun, but it really gets you thinking about how the women in our society are presented, packaged, and sold in today’s society, don’t you think?

I love the real-life creations… it brings the characters a whole new depth. It is also brings a much higher elegance and level of mature beauty to these timeless characters. Much better than the women looking ridiculous in Disney costumes walking around the theme park.
